Creating a Curvaceous Lawn with Artificial Grass

Create the Effect with Planting

If you're creating your garden from scratch, a great tip is to use your garden hose to outline the shape of the new lawn. You can keep moving it until you're absolutely happy with the design, then mark it out with stakes or spray paint and start digging your beds. Aim for a minimum width of three feet wide for maximum interest. Use the same trick to add curve appeal to standard straight and angular borders. Now plant up with foxgloves, thyme, lavender and honeysuckle for a border that will both attract wildlife and delight your senses.

Edge for Effect

A neat edging will really finish off your lawn and give a very professional effect. Timber is a traditional choice and effective if you're combining your curved lawn with a deck, while metal edging can bring a contemporary edge to your garden. Bricks or pavers look lovely with cottage-garden-style planting thanks to their natural appeal and can be used vertically as a separator or horizontally to provide a lovely highlight. Whichever style you choose, always remember to locate your utilities before you start to dig.

If for some reason you can't dig in an edging strip, why not raise your borders instead? This can create a strong focal point to your curved lawn that looks quite stunning. Whichever style you choose, consider a rubber edge if you've laid your artificial grass over a hard surface, and use cement to fill the gap between a patio and your lawn for the neatest look.

The Key to Great Installation

When it's time to install your artificial lawn, it's crucial that the ground you're installing your curved lawn on is level and free from sharp stones. Infill with sharp sand, and get the area well compacted before overlaying with a geotextile membrane to inhibit weeds from growing and spoiling your new lawn. Now position your artificial grass, joining strips together with special tape, and carefully trim your curved edges. Don't be tempted to rush the job for the most professional finish. Then fluff the pile with a stiff brush and enjoy your newly laid and gorgeously curvaceous artificial lawn.

Artificial lawns have come a long way from the days of Astroturf and are now virtually indistinguishable from the real thing.
