Plan everything out
Knowing you have a solid plan ready to go will save you both time and money in the long run. Be specific about what areas you want to cover with artificial grass, so you know how much you’ll need of all your materials and you know what you’re doing.
Prepare the area
It may be tempting to rush this, however, taking the time to make sure it’s done properly will ensure you don’t have any problems further down the line. You’ll want to remove any lawn already there and excavate roughly 3 inches below where you want the final height to be. Once you have done that, tamp down the soil and install your edging around the perimeter.
It is possible to install artificial grass over concrete, however, you’ll either need a slight slant so the water can run off, or drill holes for drainage. Or you could remove the concrete and then continue on to installing a base. Either way, fake grass is easy to install directly on top of existing tiles or concrete.
Install a Base
For your base, lay down roughly 6mm of a material such as decomposed granite, limestone chippings or sand if it’s not too sharp – sharp sand will wash away with heavy drainage). You can use a piece of timber to smooth everything out and make sure it’s even. If you’re adding a weed membrane, do this when everything is fully compacted.
If you’ve chosen to install a weed membrane, make sure you choose one that’s good quality and drains well, this is especially important for anything poolside. It’s good to note that if you have pets, a weed membrane can trap pet urine so you may want to consider this.
Roll out your artificial grass
Unroll your artificial grass out over the area you plan to install it. Make sure you allow 24 hours for your turf to acclimatize to the shape of the ground and let the fibres return to their normal shape. Once in position, trim any excess grass you have.
Add the finishing touches
Secure the grass around the pool first, it’s best to use smaller nails, spread apart evenly instead of glue for this part. Make sure all nails are hammered in properly, you don’t want nails sticking out that could cause an injury. Then move on to the joins and secure the lawn around the perimeter.
