Laying artificial grass on soil

By 19 May 2022

Artificial grass is often much easier to install than you think. While you can hire professionals, it’s easy to DIY it too. Laying artificial grass on soil is often the most straightforward option, as laying over grass can cause drainage issues, and it’s much harder to ensure you have an even surface. So if you have a bare patch in your garden that you’re wondering what to do with or a patch of grass you’re considering digging up, we can help.

Here’s a quick guide to artificial grass installation on soil.

Measure and Choose Your tools

First, you’ll want to think about how much artificial grass you’ll need to order for the area and what tools you’ll need. Your artificial grass order will be measured by square metres, so make sure you measure the area accordingly and allow for a small amount of extra length as you’ll lose some when trimming and fitting.

There are a few extra tools and supplies you’ll want too. We’ve added links to these products to make it easier for you. To start, you’ll at least want a good Stanley knife to cut your turf, Seam Tape, adhesive and something to spread it and Fixing pins. These are the basics, but if you want to make the job easier still, there are many insulation tools and edging systems you can also use.

Prep the Area

We would recommend edging to make neater lines. If you’re doing this, you’ll want to begin with this. When you begin digging, install your edging around the perimeter. If you’re not using edging, use fixing pins to hold your soil in place.

You’ll want to remove topsoil and dig a depth of around 35mm, then spread your sand over the area and compact it, ensuring you have an even surface as you do. If you’ve installed edging, your sand should come to the top of it.

Underlay

Once you’ve got an even flat surface, this is when you install your weed membrane. This will stop anything sprouting through your artificial lawn once it’s installed. Make sure this reaches all the edges.

Once this is done, it’s time to install your artificial grass underlay. This should be cut just before the perimeter to help securely fasten the edge.

Layout Your Grass

Lay your grass out, move it into position, and cut the edges to size. If you’re using more than one piece, make sure they’re all facing the same direction.

Joins

Go around the joins in your grass with your adhesive and tape, ensuring all the seams are joined together. Line up the artificial grass and fold back the edges of the join. Apply the glue and tape, making sure any adhesive is evenly spread, then fold the grass back down and make sure the connection is seamless.

Brush

Once you’ve done this, all that’s left to do is give it an excellent brush to ensure any fibres pressed down while rolled up are lifted back up into shape.

Now, all there is to do is enjoy your new beautiful, low maintenance lawn! Now you’ve seen how easy it is to install one. Are you considering some artificial grass installation in your garden? We offer express delivery, so order today from our collection to get your new lawn ASAP.
